Welcome to the Department of Bioengineering

Dr. Kenneth J. McLeod, ChairBioengineering is the newest department in the Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University. Started with support from the National Science Foundation in 2002, the Bioengineering program is already the second largest engineering major at Binghamton University.

The Bioengineering undergraduate program reflects the sea-change that is occurring in the world of engineering as the era of manufacturing based economies in the developed countries comes to an end, and information based economies begin to dominate. While the specifics of an engineering education must change in this information age, we believe that the need for individuals who can create and improve technologies in response to new opportunities will continue to be as relevant in the 21st century as it has been in the last century. In large part, what will distinguish the 21st century engineer from their predecessors will be their ability to work with complex systems, and so the primary focus of the bioengineering program here at Binghamton is complex systems.

In addition to developing the new undergraduate program, the Bioengineering faculty here at Binghamton are actively involved in the creation and expansion of graduate programs in Biomedical Engineering, Biosystems Science, and Collective Dynamics Studies, which build on their diverse research activities.

We hope this website serves to answer most of your questions about Bioengineering at Binghamton, but if you have any additional questions about educational opportunities in Bioengineering, or are interested in career opportunities at Binghamton, please do not hesitate to contact us either by email, or by phone. We look forward to hearing from you.
